When New York-based arts publisher e-flux launched the e-flux journal online, a high-end designer had to prepare gorgeous, print-ready PDFs for each essay by hand. I worked closely with the designer to identify and formalize the unspoken framework that guided page layouts, from typography to image placement. I then implemented those rules as a Ruby-based web tool, enabling editors to produce high-quality PDFs from HTML content with one click, refining as necessary. The software has been used every month since its launch in 2009.
