Google News Lab Trends Wall

As part of an effort to raise awareness of Google Trends data among journalists during the 2016 election season, Google News Lab worked with Pitch Interactive to produce real-time data visualizations, to play continuously on screens of all sizes in Google-sponsored spaces: on a massive 21’×12’ display in the “spin rooms” at presidential debates, and on touch screens for filming TV segments at the DNC and RNC. I worked as a member of Pitch’s engineering team to establish a backend architecture to continuously aggregate data, then to create a custom CMS enabling News Lab editors to produce visuals from data views on the fly, and then cue them up on displays in the space, individually or in playlists. These visuals were widely photographed, several times with presidential candidates posing in front, and, along with embeddable and sharable versions, received countless media impressions.
